Gouda

Ceremonial glass with a toast to the city of Gouda.

On the bowl a fine wheel engraving of the coat of arms of Gouda, in a rococo cartouche held by two lions. Between the cartouche and the lions we see braches of thorns. Underneath the coat of arms in a banderol the inscription, the motto of Gouda:

'PER ASPERA AD ASTRA"

(litteraly 'through the thorns to the stars')

Leadglass with Dutch engraving.

Second half eighteenth century.
